Thallus: greyish-white, often with paler warted papillae that sometimes become abraded but never sorediate.
Apothecia: frequent; black, convex and immarginate
Ascospores: simple (rarely 1-septate), 35-56 x 19-34µm

Chemistry: Perlatolic acid.

Distribution & Ecology:
Widely distributed in the southern cool-temperate zone. Several collections from the Falkland Islands, Chile, Argentina (Isla de los Estados), New Zealand (Auckland Islands, Campbell Island, South Island) and Tasmania. Epiphytic and terricolous, over bryophytes (occasionally on rotting wood).

The fertile, non-sorediate counterpart of M. bryophilus.
