Thallus: greyish-white, smooth, generally deeply cracked, sorediate.
Apothecia: frequent; black, convex and immarginate
Ascospores: simple (rarely 1-septate), 27-51 x 17-29 µm

Chemistry: Perlatolic acid and virensic acid Pd+ orange-red.

Distribution & Ecology:
Widely distributed in the southern cool-temperate zone. Several collections from Chile, Argentina (Isla de los Estados), New Zealand (Auckland Islands, Campbell Island, South Island) and Tasmania. Epiphytic and terricolous, over bryophytes.

Distinguished from ofther sorediate species by the Pd+ orange-red reaction.
