Chemistry. Thallus K, C+ red, KC+ red, P; gyrophoric acid by TLC.

Distribution and ecology: Known only from SW Chile.

Notes: This species has been reduced to synonymy wih the Californian species L. mannii Tuck. (Hertel 1997: Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 32: 95-111.), both species having wide ascospores and a thallus containing gryophoric acid. However, the taxa have a very different macroscopic morphology and the hypothecium of L. mannii is also often brown pigmented. In addition the two taxa occur in different climatic zones: L. kalbii being a species of the high-rainfall, cool temperate region, whereas L. mannii occurs in the Mediterranean climate of southern California. It is possible that the collections from central Chile belong to L. mannii s. str.
